The method

Rugs are washed by hand, in cold water, with plant-based soap. That is what the word green means here - it describes how the rug is cleaned, not a badge. Cold water keeps wool from felting and keeps older vegetable dyes from running into the ivory ground of a pattern. Plant-based soap is mild enough to leave the natural lanolin in wool, so the pile stays soft instead of dry and brittle. Nothing is machine scrubbed, and nothing is pushed through a hot cycle to save time.

Before any water is used, the rug is dusted. Dry soil is the real enemy: sand works its way to the base of the pile and cuts the fibres every time someone walks across it. Washing a rug without dusting it first just turns that sand into mud in the foundation.

What South Florida does to a rug

The rugs we collect around Plantation, Davie and Sunrise all have the same three problems. Pet accidents soak through wool and sit in the foundation where a home cleaner cannot reach them, which is why the smell keeps coming back on a humid day. Sand from the yard and the pool deck gets tracked in and ground down through the pile. And the humidity means a rug washed at home never dries all the way through, so it holds a musty smell and, on tile or terrazzo, traps moisture underneath.

A rug on hard flooring also moves. Corners curl, edges catch underfoot and the binding goes first. We repair fringes, sides and binding by hand while the rug is with us, so it goes back down flat.
